With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Keith Boomhower, Senior Constable (retired) OPP badge No. 4471. Keith passed away on Thursday April 17, 2025, in Gladstone MB. He was 74 years old

With heavy hearts, we announce that Keith Robert Boomhower went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at the age of 74.

Keith had been courageously battling the debilitating effects of Parkinson’s disease for the past eight years. While we mourn his loss, we rejoice that his suffering is over and he is now in the presence of his Savior, walking streets of gold and rejoicing in Heaven.

Keith was born in Dryden, Ontario, to Bob and Rose Boomhower. Four years later, his brother Randy was born, completing their family. Together, they enjoyed the outdoor life—fishing, hunting, and experiencing the natural beauty of Northwestern Ontario.

Keith began his law enforcement career with the Ontario Provincial Police in October 1971, retiring in December 2001. He served in Thunder Bay from 1971 to 1974, was transferred to the remote outpost of Armstrong from 1974 to 1979 and took a temporary post with the City Crime Unit in Kenora in 1995. Much of his career was spent in Dryden, where he served from 1979 until his retirement. Keith was a well-known and highly respected police officer in Dryden and the surrounding communities.

After retiring from the O.P.P., Keith continued serving the public as a municipal prosecutor for provincial offenses in the Kenora District until 2017.

Keith shared a lifelong bond with his ‘brothers in blue’ and stayed in touch with his former partners right up until the week of his passing.

On April 19, 1982, Keith made a life-changing decision to accept the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior, and later that same year, he was called to preach. His love and passion for the Word of God, especially the King James Bible, was evident to all who knew him.

Keith was ordained as a pastor and preacher of the gospel in November 1997 and went on to pastor The Bible Baptist Church in Dryden for 13 years. He loved to study, teach, and preach the precious Word of truth, and he touched many lives through his ministry.

Keith was also an avid hunter and marksman, enjoying time in the wilderness pursuing moose, deer, and partridge. He had a deep love for music and passed on his musical talents to his daughters, Bethany and Katelyn. They often sang together at home and in church, creating cherished memories through song.

Keith married Mary Williams, and they were blessed with two daughters—Bethany, born in 1987, and Katelyn, born in 1988. Keith also leaves behind his son, Mattew, born in 1978. Later in life, Keith found great joy in his four beautiful grandchildren: Luke (16), Cian (13), Roisin (11), and Hannah (3 months).

Keith loved his family dearly and often expressed how richly blessed he felt. He was grateful for his two sons-in-law, Declan and Andy. He shared a special bond with Declan, often engaging in deep conversations about the Bible and family. Keith also enjoyed sharing his love for hunting and shooting with Andy, who became not only a son-in-law but a trusted and dear friend.

In 2019, due to declining health, Keith and Mary relocated to Manitoba to be closer to their daughter Katelyn. Although the move was difficult—his heart always remained in the wilderness of Northwestern Ontario—he came to appreciate the slower pace of retired life, learning about agriculture from Andy and enjoying the company of neighbors who shared his love for the Lord.

Erle passed away peacefully with his family by his side. He was 83 years old

Erle passed away peacefully with his family by his side. He was a 38-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Bruce Mines and had been one of the oldest living members of the branch when he passed. Erle was born at home in Galt, ON where he grew up with his two older sisters. He joined the OPP in 1963 and began his career on June 17 th, 1963, at the Port Arthur Detachment. On February 3 rd , 1964, he was transferred to Upsala. On June 18, 1967, Erle transferred to the Armstong detachment. On September 28 th , 1967, Erle married his first love Glenda also from Galt and moved her to Armstrong with him. Their two children, Bradley and Jackie, were both born at the Sioux Lookout hospital while they lived in Armstrong. On August 1st , 1973, Erle was transferred to Manitouwadge where the family spent four years. A promotion to Corporal on July 18 th , 1977, saw Erle along with his family being transferred to the Thessalon Detachment. The family lived at the detachment house prior to buying a home in Bruce Mines where he lived up until earlier this year when he moved with his partner Ruby to an apartment in Thessalon.

Erle was well known for his fair and respectful treatment of all those he encountered in his line of work. He was on the Search and Rescue Team and was well known amongst his colleagues for his expertise with his compass and knowledge of the local area. One time at an event in the Bruce Mines arena a family came up to Erle to thank him for finding their child that was lost in the woods.

He truly was a hero but the humblest kind. His grandson recently described him as tough as nails.

Prior to retirement Erle’s last transfer was to the Sault Ste. Marie DHQ Communication Unit “Radio Room” on October 15 th , 1990. Sergeant Newstead retired from the OPP on December 31 st , 1993, following 30 years of service. He was quite proud to be able to say that he was retired longer than he had worked. Erle became a member of the OPP Veterans’ Association Sault Ste. Marie Chapter and received his Life Membership four years ago.

Erle was an avid outdoorsman, fishing and hunting were his go to and the main reason he chose to stay in Northern Ontario. The stories from the many fishing/hunting trips with his buds are still popular topics of discussion. In fact, the most conversation you got from Erle was about fishing or hunting or the celebrations afterwards.

Erle stood by and cared for his wife Glenda through many years of illness until she passed in 2010. He then connected and found love again with a family friend, Ruby Cullen, and they spent his last years together. Ruby has been a lifeline for Erle and had dedicated herself to him.

Erle is survived by his children Bradley Newstead and Jackie Newstead (Allen), grandson Keely Newstead, Partner Ruby Cullen and her sons Cecil MacDuff (Joanne), John MacDuff (Julie), Sister-in-law Jean Baird, Nieces and Nephews Christine Snow (Sue), Craig Fetterly (Linda), Rhonda Fetterly, Michelle Schnarr (Dwayne), Jason Baird (Sylvia), Jeremy Baird (Melissa) and many great nieces and nephews.

Erle was predeceased by his wife Glenda Newstead, his parents Elvin (Slim) and Dorothy Newstead, sisters Betty Snow (Hubert), Peggy Fetterly (Ron), and his brother-in-law James Baird

It is with sadness that we advise of the passing of George Couckuyt. He was 73 years old

Of Grand Bend, passed unexpectedly, but peacefully at Stratford General Hospital with his beloved wife of 45 years, Brenda by his side.  Dearly loved brother of Donna McQueen of Surrey, B.C. and #1 Uncle of Hannah McQueen.  Brother-In-Law of Linda & John Campbell, Heather & Bob Maass, Garry Desjardine & Diane Meurkes, Nelson Desjardine, David Desjardine & Anmarie Hoffman.  Special Uncle of many nieces & nephews and great nieces & nephews.  Life long friends of Dan (2024) & Marianne Lucio.   Predeceased by his parents Cyril (1994) & Emma (2019) (Murphy). Sister-in-law. Marian Venner (2021) & Barbara Clarke (2020)

George had a 25 year career with the O.P.P. where he was stationed in Merlin and Wheatley.  He taught C.P.R. and first aid as well as being a firearm’s instructor.  Upon retirement, he and Brenda moved back to Grand Bend to his childhood home.  Always up for new challenges, he traded his red flashing light for a blue one and was a snow plow driver for 10 years.

George enjoyed many hobbies such as woodworking, (never-ending house renovations) as well as photography, stained glass and his latest artistic talent was creating jewelry from silverware.  Over the years he spent many hours on the water fishing or boating for relaxation.  His garage was his happy place with organized chaos, but “he knew exactly where everything was.”

George was a member of the Ontario Provincial Police Association and a proud & dedicated Ordinary Member of The Royal Canadian Legion both in Merlin & Grand Bend for 33 years, serving as Vice President, Poppy Chair as well as being a Promotions & Advertising volunteer.

Even though these last few years George faced physical limitations due to a diagnosis of Inclusion Body Myositis in 2017, he was always up for a chat and willing to share an opinion or advice or simply listen.  He had a wide range of knowledge of many topics and likely never realized how much he truly touched people’s lives throughout his life.

George has generously donated ocular tissue for the purpose of transplant and also furthering medical research through The Trillium Gift of Life Network.

As per George’s wishes, cremation has taken place.  A short service at Pinery Cemetery, Klondyke Rd. Grand Bend will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2025 at 11:30 a.m.  A gathering to share our stories of George and raise a glass immediately following in the downstairs lounge at Grand Bend Legion 20 Municipal Dr.

Chapter #13 Life Member, Walter Wroblowsky, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2025, at the age of 81, in Hamilton, Ontario.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Walter Michael Wroblowsky on March 24, 2025 in his 81st year. Walter was a dedicated law enforcement officer and community advocate whose career spanned several regions, touching countless lives along the way.

Born on April 13, 1943, in Winnipeg Manitoba to Walter and Jean Wroblowsky (Gladu), Walter moved to Atikokan Ontario in 1964 where he met and married the love of his life Carrol in 1965.

Walter was passionate about serving his community from a young age. He began his law enforcement career with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in 1968 and made significant contributions throughout the Emo and Fort Frances regions from 1968 to1986. His commitment to community policing and prevention was evident in every aspect of his work, where he focused on building strong relationships within the community.

Walter had a hand in developing the First Nations policing as a liaison officer in this area in 1975 with 1 special constable. By 1978 13 special constables were under his supervision within the region.

Walter was also appointed as full-time community services officer in 1974 and in his time in Emo / Fort Frances / Rainy River districts he visited over 2,156 classrooms where over 53,000 district students heard his presentations.

Walter enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and coached hockey and baseball in the local area.

In addition to his valuable work in the Northern regions, Walter also served in the Toronto General Headquarters of the OPP, where he worked in the crime prevention department. His experiences in a bustling metropolitan environment further enriched his understanding of policing and community service, allowing him to bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to every role he held.

Walter later moved on to the Sudbury OPP Detachment, where he served as a Sergeant. His responsibilities included overseeing dispatch and community services, where his leadership skills shone brightly. Walter retired in Sudbury in 1996.

Walter’s dedication to instilling values in young people extended beyond his career in law enforcement. He was involved with the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets and was with the RCSCC Crusaders, as a cadet, where he reached the rank of Chief Petty Officer 1st class. From 1975 to 1986, he served as a Commissioned Officer, (LT Navel Reserves Cadet Cadre), with the RCSCC 144 Fort Frances, where he further contributed to shaping the lives of youth. He was the Commanding Officer for 18 months and Executive Officer for 6. His passion for mentorship and community engagement was evident throughout his life.

Known for his compassionate nature and dedication to public safety, Walter was not only an officer but also a friend to many. He had an unwavering belief in the importance of community, working tirelessly to create a safer and more supportive environment for all residents.

He is survived by his loving family, including his wife Carrol Wroblowsky (Wedlake), Son Walter Wroblowsky (Natalie), Daughter Stacey Collins (Steve), grandchildren, Nicholas, Felicia Cunha (Jesse), Liam, Abby, Sydney, Owen and Jack, great grandchildren Bella, Archer, Dexter, sisters Linda (Herb) and Heather (Paul) and sister and brother in-laws, Margaret, Shirley (Gerald) and Heather (Robert), and many nieces and nephews, who will forever cherish the moments they shared. Walter’s legacy of service and commitment will live on in the hearts of those whose lives he touched. He was predeceased by his sister Kathy (Ron).

As per Walters Wishes there will not be a Memorial service, and a cremation will take place. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to any charity of your choice.
